Geeks Afield

Geeks Afield

Jeff and I as we were hiking out of the Grand Canyon on Bright Angel Trail, April 2002.

The Summer of 2001, I was on a Southwest road/camping trip with my girlfriend, Joyce.   One of our stops was the Grand Canyon.  We had planned on spending just one day and one night there, but spent 2 nights.  I was simply awed by the beauty of the place.

During that stay I hatched a plan to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon for my 50th birthday!  I had always had an urge to backpack, but never put it into action.   The thought of Bright Angel campground gave me the motivation.   That and to prove to myself that at 50 I was not completely washed up.

I begin gearing up, and going on short hikes in the Ozarks close to my then home of Tulsa, Oklahoma.   I also got my brother Jeff interested, and he begin joining me on my short hikes and planning for the Grand Canyon expedition.   Geeks Afield was born.

Since the Grand Canyon we have continued hiking, and hopefully expanding our horizons.

For our amusement and to share our experiences with friends and family I have created this little web site.   Hope you enjoy the pictures and other “attractions” on this little site.
